Burnout: How Your Company Can Tackle Remarkable Employee Well-Being
Is your company losing employees to burnout?
AI is automating tasks. Companies are cutting costs. Hybrid work is now the norm.
But for all the ways workplaces are evolving, there’s one problem we still haven’t solved: Employee burnout.
Employees are stretched thin, stress levels are rising, and mental health leaves are becoming more common. If we don’t address this now, businesses will keep losing their best talent—not because they aren’t capable, but because they’re exhausted.
Look around you. And the data doesn’t lie.
Employees, Managers and Leaders are tired. Even exhausted. They have a few coping mechanisms that they use to the best of their ability. Should they be coping or finding real solutions to the underlying cause of their burn-out?
Is something really wrong with the way corporations operate? Why are the numbers showing that something needs to change at the organizational level?
- More employees are taking mental health leaves.
According to Statistics Canada, 7.5% of employed Canadians took time off to deal with stress or mental health reasons in the 12 months leading up to April 2023. - Women are disproportionately affected.
A study by Benefits Canada found that 69% of all mental health-related leaves in North America were taken by women. - Burnout if expensive. Really expensive.
Mental health struggles cost the Canadian economy $51 billion / year in lost productivity, healthcare expenses and a reduced quality of life. Source: (CPA Canada) - Employees are willing to change jobs for better mental health.
A GreenShield Canada survey found that 1 in 3 Canadians would consider quitting their job for one that offers stronger mental health benefits.
Data doesn’t life. Your company expects your employees to perform at peak performance from 9-5 (or longer).
But is your company’s structure set up to enable employees to perform that way?
Do men perform differently than women?
Why are women outnumbering men in terms of mental health leaves?
Are companies even interested in understanding what causes burnout?
Some questions your leadership needs to find answers to NOW.
How is your company handling burnout?
In my research, I’ve found that many companies offer solutions like meditation apps, wellness perks, flexible working arrangements, and additional vacation days.
While these are positive steps, they often fail to address a deeper, more fundamental issue: if the company values and workplace culture do not foster open, vulnerable conversations or provide training in self-awareness, personal development, and life skills (not just professional competencies), you may be setting yourself up for high turnover.
According to studies, 1 in 3 employees are considering a job change at any given time. Imagine losing 33% of your workforce due to mental health issues.
This dynamic creates a cycle that strains your HR department with constant recruitment, overburdens managers with re-training, and results in disengaged employees who lack long-term commitment to the company.
This is a major red flag for any organization.
Rather than simply coping with these challenges, why not be proactive? Consider integrating self-awareness training into your onboarding process, equipping employees with the tools to manage emotions, handle workplace ups and downs, build confidence, and resolve conflicts before they even begin their roles.
This approach could set you apart from your competitors and foster an environment where employees feel truly supported and proud to work for your company.
People want to feel heard, but without the skills to navigate complex organizational structures, many employees feel their only option is to leave.
What if you showed them there’s another way—through proprietary self-awareness training for employees, managers, and leaders?
Investing in this kind of training can make a meaningful impact on employee retention.
It’s time to plan for employee retention and avoid employee burnout
The reality is, companies that invest in self-awareness and mental health don’t just retain employees—they create thriving, engaged teams. In fact, a study done by Gnapartners.com found that 78% of employees consider a healthy and sustainable work culture crucial for their mental well-being.
I can keep highlighting data for you to help you understand why mental health and well-being need to be cutting edge practices in your organization… but I won’t.
Just look around you. You will know that any company that invests in self mental health and well being training will be able to create an environment where employees feel safe.
This is the only organizational change that can change your culture from the inside out.
And in a world where 1 in 3 workers would leave for better support, can any company afford to ignore that?
Burnout won’t fix itself. The question is—is your company ready to lead the change?
