Simplifying the idea of dis-identification and its meaning in your spiritual awakening

What is dis-identification?

When I came across this term “Dis-identification” a long time ago, the content I read online left me very confused. At the time, I just didn’t get it. Recently though, I have felt this process of dis-identification happening within me. And it’s very very uncomfortable. That is precisely why I decided to write about it. Hopefully I make these concepts sound simple enough for everyone.

Dis-identification is a state of feeling “disconnected with your self”. Simple. You just don’t identify with the old life you lived just a few days, months, years back.

Examples of Dis-identification

Some examples of how you might identify yourself: male, female, strong, tall, fair, dark, beautiful, poor, rich, advanced, naive, extrovert, introvert, sophisticated, raw, healthy, unhealthy, mother, father, educated, un-educated, high-society, middle-class, religious, atheist etc.

The process of dis-identification breaks down your current identity. So you might go from being a “social” person to wanting to be alone all the time. You might go from being a people pleaser to prioritizing your own needs.

Spiritual alignment and dis-identification

Dis-identification can happen at any stage of your life but it’s significantly noticeable when you change your life in a conscious way. I have been on a spiritual path for a few years now and have recently noticed dis-identification happening within. I have been feeling confused, dis-connected with the material world and even with people that care more about the material. I am very sure that I have felt these feelings of non-attachment before but I am noticing them even more as I taste a new way of being.

Your higher self – is pure love, peace and oneness. And so when you are on a spiritual path, if something does not vibrate on the frequency of love or higher, you will move away from it. And that is what causes the letting go of the old. During this process, you will shed the old identity. This phase can be very confusing and can bring up feelings of loneliness. It helps to have a partner that understands what you might be going through, if not on the same path as you.

Know that, dis-identification is a pre-requisite for self-discovery.

symptoms of dis-identification

When you are in this process of “letting go” and dis-connection to self and others you will notice that:

1. Change in relationships

Your old way of being will not appeal to you anymore. You might not want to hang out with the same group of friends that you are used to.

2. Change in eating habits

Not surprisingly, your eating habits will change. You will start to notice the foods that feel good in your body and give up the ones that create toxicity.

3. STILLNESS over noise

Oftentimes, you will reach for stillness and peace when you can. Being still is a way to becoming present with what is and our spirits crave presence.

4. change in leisure activities

If you watched TV multiple times a day, kept up with the news and caught up on the latest movies, you might find yourself shocked to notice that your old leisure habits do not interest you anymore. In fact you might want to watch shows or read books that enhance you and your spiritual growth.

5. simplify your complex life

You will find yourself staying away from people that are dramatic or complain all the time. The same way you will also notice you finding simple solutions to daily problems. It might seem easier for you to be honest about your feelings than to cover them up with complicated excuses.

These are just some symptoms of dis-identification. If you have any others you would like me to mention, please email them to me through the contact form on the site of my facebook group.

Tips to handle the dis-identification process

Honestly, dis-identification has been one of the toughest phases, of my spiritual awakening. Sometimes I felt as if I am losing my mind!

Now that I understand what dis-identification feels like I can be prepared for it to roll around next time around.

The closer you get to your authentic self, the easier it gets. Each time you lose a “false identity”, you get brighter. And when you are brighter, you begin relying on your own spirit to help you through this process.

This time of shedding or losing your old identity can also create instability in your world. Dormant health issues might come up or old emotions and wounds might surface. These issues come up so that you can finally resolve them. And the best way to let them flow through is to stay present.

You can read my post about “tips for staying present”, to help you through this time.

the positive side of dis-identification

Dis-identification enables you to practice non-attachment. When you are not attached to material objects, they lose the power to control you. And that is a step in the right direction. It’s becomes easier to create positive momentum when your thoughts aren’t constantly tied up in old mind chatter.

The process of letting go also allows you to move forward and discover a new way of being. You get to decide how you want to live. This is a great time to start experimenting with daily routines and rituals.

So even know you might be physically tired, make sure to plan an exciting future for yourself.

Have fun!
